How To Protect Yourself & Others From COVID-19

Important Ways to Slow the Spread

Wear a mask

  • Everyone 2 years of age or older should wear a mask in public.
  • In addition to being at least 6 feet apart, wear a mask, especially around people who do not live with you.
  • If someone in your family is infected, family members should use caution, including wearing a mask, to prevent it from spreading to others.
  • Wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer before applying your mask.
  • Put your mask on your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin.
  • Fit your mask with a smile on the side of your face, slip bangles on your ears or tie a wire around your head.
  • If you constantly have to adjust your mask, it may not fit properly, and you may need to find a different mask type or brand.

Effective February 2, 2021, airplanes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation must wear masks inside or outside the United States or at U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.

Stay 6 feet away from others

  • Outside your home: Keep a 6-foot distance between yourself and people who don’t live in your family.

Get Vaccinated

  • The official COVID-19 vaccine can help you with COVID-19.
  • You should get the Covid-19 vaccine when you are available.
  • Once you are fully vaccinated, you may be able to start doing some of the things that you stopped doing because of the epidemic.

Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated spaces

  • Crowding in restaurants, bars, fitness centers, or movie theaters puts you at greater risk for COVID-19.
  • Avoid indoor spaces that do not offer as much fresh air as possible.
  • If indoors, open the windows and doors to bring fresh air if possible.

Wash your hands often

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially when you go to a public place or after coughing or sneezing.
  • This washing is especially important:
    • Before eating or preparing food
    • Before touching your face
    • After using the rest house
    • After leaving the public space
    • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
    • After handling your mask
    • After changing the diaper
    • After caring for a sick person
    • After touching animals or pets
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with washing hands.

Cover cough and sneeze

  • If you are wearing a mask: You can sneeze or sneeze into your mask. Put on a new, clean mask as soon as possible and wash your hands.
  • If you are not wearing a mask:
  • Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or use the inside of your elbow and do not spit.
  • Discard used tissues.
  • Wash your hands immediately with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Clean and disinfect

Clean high-touch surfaces daily. These include tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, toys, and sinks.
If someone is sick or tested positive for COVID-19, disinfect frequently touching surfaces. Use a household disinfectant product from EPA List N: according to the manufacturer’s label guidelines for antiseptic for coronavirus (COVID-19).

Monitor your health daily

  • Be aware of the symptoms. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19.
    • Especially important if you are running an important task, going to the office or workplace, and in settings where physical distance can be difficult to maintain 6 feet.
  • If temperature develops, take your temperature.
    • Do not take your temperature within 30 minutes of exercise or after taking medications that may lower your temperature, such as acetaminophen.
  • Follow the CDC guidance if symptoms develop.
