Understanding accessibility and custom fonts
Before adding a custom font to your post, it’s important to note that this can cause accessibility issues for some users, as screen readers can’t always interpret them.
So, if you choose to add a custom Unicode font to your post (including emojis), consider adding some of these to make sure your post is fully accessible to everyone while maintaining your style and aesthetic:
- Include alt text on your images
- Add Closed Captions (CC) to your Instagram Stories with one of Instagram’s in-app fonts to allow screen readers to relay information
- If you are only using Unicode fonts in your caption, consider having an additional single font caption below or in your first comment
- Keep this in mind when planning your posts and try to be as inclusive as possible. You can read more about how to make your Instagram account more accessible here.

Best Practices for Using Custom Instagram Fonts
Custom Instagram fonts can be a great way to add a point of difference to your content, but they can also do more harm than good if not used thoughtfully.
Here are 4 pointers to keep your custom fonts on the right track:
- Keep your aesthetics in mind
Choose your fonts carefully. Even the most basic font often has a connotation, so always think about what you feel is most appropriate for your brand and aesthetic. For example, minimalist fonts can be indicative of modern simplicity, while italic typefaces can be described as romantic or feminine.
2. Use sparingly
There may be too many good things. Use custom fonts sparingly, too much can seem spam and will reduce the impact. Later, we save custom fonts for major calls to action, headers, and emphasis.
3. Take readability into account
Some custom fonts are really hard to read. Make sure you can easily read any text you share on desktop and mobile.
4. Be consistent
Once you’ve found an effective custom font that matches your brand, stick with it. Being consistent can boost your brand image and create a sense of familiarity with your followers.
How to Add Custom Instagram Fonts to Instagram Stories
Unlike the rest of Instagram, Instagram Stories offers several different fonts.
But even with these different options, there isn’t much room to create a true branding experience on Instagram Stories.
There are 3 main ways to add custom fonts to your Instagram Stories:
1.Use a graphic design app
If you’re new to Instagram Stories design, there are plenty of easy-to-use creative apps to help you along the way.
Over and Canva are two great options for crafting Instagram stories tailored to your brand. Both apps offer a huge range of fonts, as well as the ability to download a custom font.
In this example, we used Over to add text to an image stored from our Camera Roll.
To recreate this, select a video or image in your Camera Roll, then set the size to Story:
Next, tap on the Text icon and enter the text you chose. Scroll to select a font or select Get More to open the Over font library.
To upload a custom font, scroll through the library to the Custom tab and select Add Fonts.
From here you can upload a custom font in Over to use in your future designs!
TIME-SAVING TIP: Copy and paste text overlays into your Instagram Stories! Use a design app like Over to write a line of text on a transparent background. Save to your Camera Roll, copy the image and paste it into your Instagram Stories by selecting the Text tool and holding the screen for 2-3 seconds until the Paste button appears.
